Rather heavily toned, to be sure.

Here's the intriguing aspect of this specimen - a restamped "3" and maybe even the "9", too?

Nice find - thanks for sharing! It's always nice to see something a bit different within the classic US commemorative series.

Believe it or not, the 1893 Columbian with a repunched date has been known for at least 87 years - the variety was reported in A Register of Half Dollar Die Varieties by M.L. Beistle back in 1929!

He reported on a few different varieties of Columbian half dollars, including those with "re-cut" dates and those with die cracks.

The more current Cherrypicker's Guide reference lists repunched date varieties for the 1892 and 1893 issues. Your 1893 coin is an example of what is formally referred to as FS-C50-1893-301 though you'll most often see it listed as "RPD FS-301" in descriptions of a pertinent 1893 Columbian half dollar.

Are you a variety collector? A classic commemorative collector?

Hope you enjoy having it in your collection.

Thank you for the authoritative identification.

Neither commemoratives in general nor their varieties are any particular interest of mine. The coin was out of an old collection that is being liquidated piecemeal. I happened to be in the right place at the right time, and as usual couldn't resist something that's a little out of the ordinary, especially when the price is right as it was in this instance.

I hadn't even thought to check my copy of the Cherrypickers' Guide, but see now that the closeup photo published there of the repunched date is a doppelganger for the one I've posted here. I note with some disappointment, however, that there's evidently no price premium whatsoever attached to this variation.

True, most US commemorative varieties carry little or no premium. There just aren't enough collectors with an interest in the classic US commemorative series to support a robust subset that seeks out the series' varieties.
