Quote: I just can't imagine why any reputable dealer would sell a high value coin such as this raw unless they were up to no good. that is quite a contradictory statement

The simple answer as to why it is being sold raw is because the coin has some problems.
If the coin would slab problem-free you can bet your bottom dollar that GSC would have sent it in.
If it would slab problem-free it would bring much more money than what it would bring raw. Dealers like GSC know this.
Is it worth the risk of tying up several thousand dollars for several weeks to find out what the problem is? Not in my book!

I played around with the images in photoshop a little bit. Nothing appeared that you couldn't see in the main image but... when I reduced the gamma the marks at the very top of the obverse and directly next to the bottom right of her dress really stand out. Also there is a crescent shaped line running between her right arm and the stars. The reverse doesn't quite show as much though there *might* be some hair lines between the left wing and "ERICA". Also, I'd be concerned about what the toning really looks like under normal lighting conditions.
I think the spots by her head and dress are extremely likely to be something that gets a details grade, so only do that lowball idea I suggested earlier if you'd be ok with some detail issues.

I've been blocked from their FB page but letting people know the deal about GSC. A simple google search will yield even more results. They are known for juicing their images, selling problem coins and hiding the flaws in the juiced up pictures. Even a few reports of them selling counterfeit coins. I'd stay away.

I bought a coin from them a year or 2 ago. I know I still have the invoice. I'll need to check what it was, but I remember being pleasantly surprised because I had read the bad reviews. I have no hesitations buying from them again, but I'm more of a $10-25 coin guy, so I can't comment on their selling practices for high end coins like this...
I vaguely remember receiving an unsolicited follow up email from them to make sure I was satisfied with the purchase

As the others have said why would they be selling a truly rare coin that is supposed to be proof and not have it slabbed and graded? Most likely there is some problem with the coin and they are being deceptive. If that is true then they are dishonest and I would not deal with them. However, we can't make a final judgement until the coin is sold and we were able to get feedback, but how does that occur? If a coin is worth maybe $200 I can see why it would not be slabbed, but if it is worth $5000 and being sold by a company something stinks.

They get some really great coins. I've bought a dozen or so coins from GSC over the years and have not returned any of them. Having said that - yes - they are masters of photography and I am always quite careful. I usually reduce their grade a couple of notches and bid accordingly. I don't win often but am happy with those that I buy.

GSC has messed up a few times and has been caught selling counterfeits. They have nice coins, but like others said, the pictures are TOO nice to the point where they actually HIDE things about the coin. Terrible service, surprises me how they have 154K sales. Look at some of the negative feedback. http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...negative_365

Heynow, Just link to the main feedback page. There is a table of their postive, neutral, and negative reviews at the top of the page. Anyone can just click on the negatives to get a page with just those. http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...backAsSeller

Quote: Hmmmm... How are they on returns if you submit a coin for grading and it comes back "Improperly Cleaned" or "Damaged" or the like? Will they take it back and refund the money you spend trying to have it graded? Read their terms Quote: Please Read Before You Bid
You are bidding on a RAW Coin.
We guarantee AUTHENTICITY ONLY!
We do not offer grades on raw coins, and we do not guarantee grades on raw coins. So they don't guarantee that the coin will grade at any level, so no they won't return your grading fees (Unless it turns out to be counterfeit). Also since they require the coin to be returned in the original holder, and within thirty days of receipt odds are good tht you won't be able to get any refund. Hard to get it back from the TPG within 30 days unless you pay high for expedited grading, and you are not likely to still have it in the original holder. I have been burned by GSC before. They do sell a lot of high end coins, but if they are raw assume they have been cleaned, whizzed, etc. I have learned my lesson from them. The only way I would buy something from them is if it's either certified or a heck of a deal considering its likely damaged.

Some of us don't like slabbed coins much. Rule of thumb is if it's a reputable dealer, there's really no reason the coin needs to be slabbed. That said, given this particular dealer's "reputation" I would not buy a raw coin from them unless I could see it in person.
