Hi

So I've been collecting coins for 2 whole days now and have spotted a couple of interesting ones lying around the house. I was hoping someone could shed some light on them and weather they are actually even collectible. I've done a lot of googling and forum reading and can't find much info. The first coin is a 2005 'coming home' 20 cent with a big blob on it (a Cud?) and I also found a 1985 $1 with faint black rings inside the rim (instant millionaire or lead pencil?)
I'm now officially addicted and can't wait to hear back from someone.
Cheers

The first coin does appear to have a Cud. Nice find! You don't see those too often. On the second coin, you are probably right about the pencil.

Hi Newb2016, to CCF! from one Aussie to another.

First coin has a Rim Cud, it's a collectable error coin, I have 5 or 6 of them, Cuds always at the same position. Value? $3-$5. Nice find!

2nd coin looks like marks from a coin rolling machine, just inside the rim. Very common, just a damaged coin.

Not common to see it on both sides of the same coin though, but not impossible. Just indicates that the coin has been the end coin twice, with opposite sides to the outer.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

I should clarify that a rim Cud only affects the thin rim, and thus is very narrow and not too obvious, while one like this that extends further in is a regular Cud.

Thanks for the warm welcome and the helpful info. I will hold onto the 20c and hopefully there's more to come. I had a look through my car today and found another couple of interesting ones. First was a 2014 $2 remembrance coin with a green ring in the centre which I gather are quite common but still looks pretty cool and I also found a 2011 $1 coin with what looks like a mint mark on it. Has anyone come across one?

Sorry for the dodgy pic it's the best I can do.
The mint mark on the $1 coin is a small 'C' next to the word Australia and above the star on the right.

They were common several years ago, but certainly not now. My current strike rate is about 1 in every 3000 (or $6000 worth) of $2 coins, so it's a definite keeper for me. I know someone else who has a much higher strike rate, so there's a bit of luck involved as well.

I haven't come across one, but the "C" indicates that it was struck in Canberra, most likely on one of the mint's public presses. People often go there to get these coins, only to lose interest and put them back into normal circulation. It probably isn't worth any more than face value, because most of the remaining ones are still in uncirculated condition. To use the proper jargon, it's called NCLT (Non-Circulating Legal Tender).

Hi Hercules thanks for the help I appreciate it. I was having a closer look at the coin today and noticed on the 'heads' side the word 'Elizabeth' is very faint. Only the letter 'B' appears ok and the rest looks very flat. Have you come across many like this? Do you think it is an error or am I just looking to hard to find things wrong?
Here's a photo
