Explain-This-Toning.

I can't really tell if the toning on this SLQ is real or artificial. What do you guys think?

Note how the coin is worn, but it has a BU level of toning. This is indicative of a prior cleaning. The color may be "natural" (induced by natural means, not by heat/chemicals/etc.).

Spent several hours on a wood stove? There was a great thread last year with coins placed on a wood stove and the various AT results....

There is no way that is natural. The uniformity of it, the fact that the color is independent of the height of the devices, the fact that is is the same on obverse and reverse. I can't tell you how they did it, but its so obvious that it is fake that it should not fool anyone.

Mix sulphur with vaseline and massage it into the coin's surfaces with a Q-tip. Wipe it afterwards with a Kleenex. For added effect, store the coin in an old envelope. Rainbow city ...

That looks like it was toned with some heat.

Looks like heat/fire toning to me and very unnatural. Something about the wear looks weird to me as well. The obverse surfaces all look uncomfortably rounded and smooth as if it were cast poorly. Besides the toning, are you sure this coin is genuine?

The coin has some value, but to cook it to get a false tone is really a crime. The toning craze will pass when so many are faked and fried like this one. I think the fake toning kills the value which is maybe between $140 and $200 on a good day. I would not buy it. I have a set of LSQ's minus the 1916. There are so many good ones in higher grades like 27-S, 23-S,.
