I have an opportunity to purchase a 1880-CC PCGS MS66+ CAC. I have doubts (concerns) that the obverse does not meet the standards for this grade. Specifically the marks on Miss Liberty's neck and nose. The reverse is very nice. Obverse image below. Comments please.

There are two opinions about this coin. PCGS says it's an upper end MS-66. CAC says that it is upper end for an upper end -66. I would tend to believe them. If it had no marks at all it would be eligible for an MS-70. The ANA grading guide allows a -67 to have what they call "imperfections".

Quote: ....CAC says that it is upper end for an upper end -66.... CAC disregards all superlatives so the above statement is not correct. CAC actually says that this coin is solid for a 66 or better per their application of the green stciker. The + in PCGS' grade has no bearing whatsoever on the CAC sticker. The coin in question is covered in virgin frost and looks like a solid 66 to me. It's also at least a $3000 coin and a $4000 asking price would be no surprise. How much can you acquire it for if I may ask?

I'd go 66 all day long. Beautiful CC Morgan.

You can't just take marks into account. They are the primary factor but Also the strike, luster, skin etc. While the strike is the slightest bit weak and there are a few minor tics the driping gorgeous skin, luster, originality and eye appeal make this a solid 66 and if not for the mouth mark and possibly the slightst of weak strike she's a 67 all day long. Assuming the reverse is just as gorgeous and mostly mark free.

1880CC Morgan in MS65 goes from $2700 to $1200 depending on if it is one of five reverses. I am just gazing at Red Book that does not even list MS66 for this coin. Is this coin one of the five reverses that Red Book mentions? It is a beautiful coin, but what is a fair price for this coin. I don't doubt that it is what PCGS says it is. What exactly is CAC? I obviously have no coins with that sticker.

Real world, an 80cc reverse of 79 is a $3500 +/- coin in 66+ with a green bean. If it were a reverse of 78 it'd be a $6500 +/- coin. CAC is a grade verification service as a second opinion that the TPG got the grade right.

The coin has been graded twice by reputable organizations, so at this point, go with your gut. At the end of the day, you are the one dishing out thousands of dollars. If these marks are significantly sized/a big eyesore, they might bother someone else and might make selling the coin somewhat more difficult-You may not get back the full value (So you MIGHT get away with offering less for the coin if this is the case). That said, photos often accentuate marks and trouble spots, and vice versa. If I were you, I would definitely have to see this coin in hand before even considering making an offer given the coin's potential value.

If CAC agrees with PCGS on the MS66+ grade, I'll bet most of the small stuff on the cheek are frost breaks not hits. Judging by the 8/7 over-date and the line on the upper lip I'll bet it's a VAM10 which seems to be pretty common. I would suggest getting a rev.78 or less common rev.79 if one could be cherry-picked.

Agree fully with the grade and CAC designation. Outstanding coin. The hits are small and close to other features so they don't jump out. Amazing cheek.

Looks like a great coin, accurately graded with a CAC sticker, to boot. If you have the money, go for it. But if you're plagued with OCD, those trivial marks will forever bother you.

To me it looks better than the 1880CC MS66 that sold for $3250. Really getting into the coin weeds with VAM's and different reverses. Your coin really looks frosty and I bet those marks on her face are almost invisible when you see the coin in hand. That is a lot of money to spend on a coin you only see online, but what is the option? I think it comes down to price. It is a scarce coin but not rare like 1916 LSQ and it will cost you no doubt. What are chances of the coin's appreciation? You have to consider that when you pay thousands for a coin I think.

Only 34 in higher grades. Nice coin! It's great for a 66+. Though the obverse has marks, they are outweighed by the fact that everything else about the coin is just simply amazing. About 10000 1916 SLQs survive in all grades BTW. Not particularly rare considering my 1852-O Half Dime cost $36 and it's estimated about 200 survive. (Many were melted in 1853.)
