I don't care much that this coin may be cleaned at the moment, since it just arrived from the ebay express. I'm just excited for the fact that the major portion of wear on this coin resulted from handling by the denizens of the last frontier of North American anarchy. So cool. Man, it must have sucked to've been the common joe or jane in the place and time this coin originated from.

I feel similar about having been in Victiorian London during that time also. Wretched conditions. It'd be a tough choice between the two but I'd have taken the Western US without hesitation. It's beautiful there.

Any suggestions on grade and what all may be wrong with this coin are welcome, and thanks for the opinions.

with the VF20.

Scratches on cheek makes me think cleaned. But don't see any scratches in field, so not sure if it has been cleaned.

VF for me, but the real beauty is as you say, the 'romance' behind it. That dollar could have been a day's pay for a cowhand on a ranch or for a hired hand on a dryland homestead, passed across the bar at a saloon by a miner on a Saturday night, or with seven others been the month's pay for a blue-coated soldier in some forsaken camp in the west.

There's a lot more to a circulated coin than just a grade.

Thank you all for the grade opinions.

Because it's cleaned is kinda bothersome, but I feel like I got a decent ebay deal for the coin after observing dozens of other lesser grade 78cc's, some cleaned even, go for around the same as what I paid.
