What's the problem except for the damage?

The horizontal cross on the four is too long. It does not match the 4 of a genuine 1914-D. This is not a genuine 1914-D. It is altered, but it was not originally a 1944-D because that date is closer to the rim. Also, this coin has a VDB on the shoulder (absent until 1918). Hmmm, probably was a 1934-D altered to 1914-D. That's the first one of those I have ever seen!

Curious about a 1934-D altered to masquerade as a 1914-D, I did an overlay of the altered coin over a genuine 1934-D. The "damage" to the 1 starts precisely where the middle of the three would have no metal to finish the full altered 1. The 19 and the 4 precisely match. I am now completely convinced that this is an altered 1934-D.

It's always few and far between that I look at these and compare counterfeit to real ones so I forget the little attributes sometimes-the extra work nss and others put into these are very much appreciated

It is always fun to learn something new. While I would have avoided this one because of what I saw as damage, not an alteration, it could have been a hole filler for me if the price was really right. The reality being that no price is right for this one.

Quote: Sloppy, sloppy.. Actually, he did a pretty good job on this coin and, would fool lots of Lincoln collectors. Good thing we have great people here on CCF that check this garbage. Thanks,nss-52

First time I've seen a 1934 altered. The D is not correct either, it's not the "triangular" type.
NOTE to collectors, if something doesn't look right, it probably isn't.
