A friend approached me at my coin club and was wanting me to sell this on ebay. Before, I commit to anything, I need to know more about it. What kind of error is it? Is it worth a premium? If so, what is it worth?

The bill is in AU condition.

I know very little about US currency, but I told him that I would ask around to see what I could learn.

Nice. You see that from time to time, but not usually to that extreme. Don't know if there is a name for it or if it would carry a premium. But cool nonetheless.

Almost looks like cleaning solvent residue on the numbering wheels may have caused this.

If the numbering wheels were still wet with residue the applied ink would then be diluted and would "splash" when they impact the paper. Notice how the splashes all are in the same direction towards the top of the note.

That's my opinion until somebody else comes up with a better explanation!

It looks heavily/over inked to me.

Interesting find. It does have some condition issues including dinged corners and a crease or five. Personally I don't think this will carry a premium but I'm not an error expert. Will let those guys chime in.

I think you could get a premium for it because it's a star and it's messed up., However, it probably would be something like a $1 premium.

I'd love to find out if it would go for more ....

Maybe try posting pics to some paper dealers...?

That is way cool. Over inking on a star note to the point that it looks like green flames coming from the digits. $20 to $40 bucks on ebay as is which, to my eye, is XF. Too bad its not CU.
