Grade opinion? Would the toning with this coin guarantee it hasn't been cleaned? I'm feeling VF+ for color?

Toning by itself is not a guarantee that a coin has not been cleaned. Not cleaned recently, maybe, but the coin still could have been cleaned a long time ago. View the coin under magnification and look for evidence of cleaning. Others here are better experts than I am at telling you exactly to look for. It is a nice coin, but it looks to me like a G4 or maybe a G6, worth less than $100 once certified, provided it is graded as not cleaned.

It looks better than G, but I can't make any guarantees regarding cleaning.

How common is toning on circulated silver? By PCGS photograde online, and my vastly lacking experience with grading, this coin would grade vf20 or better. Kinda optimistic these are original surfaces. Please feel free to destroy any naive assertions

I like it -- there is definitely something special about a circulated CC Morgan! I'm certainly no expert, but I think VF is a generous grade.

I like all CC Morgan's

I could see high VG or low VF ... I think grading for these weighs more
on obverse ... This coin has a better obverse than reverse.

I do think the scratch hurts it. I get the impression someone scratched
the letter "H" into the reverse.

Maybe scratched with a bowie knife at some starry skied high plains campfire?

I hear this term "Wild West Morgans" every so often.
What year Morgans is this including?

My criteria was any year Billy the kid was living until his shooting death in 1882. And either Carson City or SF mint. Wild West was winding down during 1890's with heavier train traffic bringing people in droves of socially stabilizing numbers.

Interesting Wild West fact I learned recently from Robert Redford's new history channel series about the subject: Wyatt Earp in his last years worked with Hollywood, consulting for subject authenticity with young John Wayne during filming of his earliest westerns.

I think you are right on with the VF grade. I also feel the toning is attractive and original. As for the scratches, it's a fence sitter as to whether or not it would warrant a details tag. I'm thinking it would. Nice coin.

Agree VF-20, but that's about it. Very attractive straight on, but it does appear like it was once cleaned - that old shine is almost always visible somewhere when viewed from an angle toward the light. Certainly market-acceptable and very nice.

Thank you all for the opinions.

What makes this coin appear like its been cleaned?

After googling "vf original morgan" mine looks very much like other morgans in similar condition. I would think that the fields would naturally be brighter and the letters and devices have darker halos from dirt and debris accumulating. I need to read up more on the science of toning, but I'm wondering if the coloration on surfaces of this coin is from paper like other toned silver coins out there.

Complicated subject. Silver coins that were once cleaned and left, for example, in a kraft envelope to re-tone over many years will often show a hint of lightly-iridescent surfaces when angled toward the light, such as you show above. An original uncleaned coin in this grade would look dead-gray in this light.

It is not a critical factor here - I believe your coin might have been cleaned a long time ago, but I could certainly be wrong. If cleaned, it has calmed down and is most attractive by any standard.

Would microscope reveal any telltale clues as to whether it's been cleaned, even if long ago?
