No, it's not illegal to send collector coins to Australia from the US. Why, what are you looking for?

I have been told by 3 different sellers, that they were told by the post office they could`nt send coins through the post and each time they have returned my money.I`m wondering if my winning bids were too low and they wanted to re-sell.All were walking liberty half`s.

This states Nothing about First Class International...which is how I ship

however never put "coins" in the contents section of the customs form
I always say "Numismatic Curiosities"

The US Postal Service's Rules concerning this are... ambiguous. There is a Rule that says you can't send money through the post, and coins are technically money, but there's another section that says you can insure collectable coins. Logically, if you can insure them for post, you are then allowed to actually post them.

Presumably your three sellers weren't normally coin dealers. Anyone who's sold and delivered coins in any quantity has already encountered this problem, and found ways to work around it, either by familiarizing themselves with the USPS Rules or simply by going to another post office where the worker has a different interpretation of the Rules.

So if I say send by First class International and the seller puts "coins" on the envelope, what will happen?

"So if I say send by First class International and the seller puts "coins" on the envelope, what will happen?"

Well a few posibilities could happen...
1. The USPS accepts it and sends it on its way
2. A unscrupulous postal employee sees it says "coins" and possibly steals it
3. The USPS rejects it and says they can't send it.

I always use different terms. For coins I usually use Numismatic discs. For banknotes its Numismatic art. And have never had a problem.

If sending coins to Australia is illegal, then I'm in trouble. I've sent sent packages marked plainly as coins with no problems. Next time you bid on an item in the States, ask the seller beforehand if they deliver to Australia.

I thought I'd read something once where coins could be sent out of the US but that you couldn't send over X amount. It might have been referring to nickels and cents. Anyone know what I'm thinking of?

When I ship coins internationally I put simply "Hobby Supplies".

G'day, I've received plenty of coins from Seppoland, via the post. One was opened by Australian Customs and resealed.
In my experience, USPS First Class Airmail is the best way to go: you can get a couple of coins & protection into an ordinary envelope to Oz for US$1.85.

I've got plenty of coins mailed to me with at least 100+ different sellers / traders etc. You don't have to get them declare that they are sending coins but instead, they can just declare it as "numismatic items" or "tokens". But of course, that depends on the sellers if they are willing to declare it as such.
