Just wondering. I want to know if it's worth spending like $20 on a roll on quarters, or other rolls. What's the chance of me finding a coin actually worth keeping (like Standing Liberty quarters, Mercury dimes, any silver coins, etc)? Just want to know. Thanks. (P.S. I haven't ever hunted before so I'm new to this).

Very slim to none, but it is always worth it to look. You are talking about buying the rolls at face value, right?

Well if your talking about rolls from the bank....what do you have to loose? Maybe a couple minutes for a roll? I don't really do that much silver hunting but I do a lot of pennies and I usually find 15 Wheaties per box. Go buy some rolls of various denomination and see how you like it. If you don't, cash in the coins and get your cash back..
P.S. It only takes one box to make it all worth it. I find it rather enjoyable though....kind of like a treasure hunt, you never know what you'll find.

Chances are slim, but it does happen . About 5 months ago I found an Indian Head cent in just searching 2 rolls of Lincolns from the bank .

If you only have a small amount to spend, I'd definitely recommend nickels followed by cents. You have a much better chance finding a silver War Nickel than a silver quarter. Dimes have been good lately for me too, but with them (along with quarters), I strongly recommend trying to get customer wrapped rolls.

If all you have is $20, it's not worth it. If all you have is $20,000, it's still not worth it. Before I slowed down, I was buying $2k to $5k per month, usually dimes. I'd find a few, but it was never worth it. What drove me was the love of the hobby, and the chance to find a few keepers, which I did.

To find the 'typical' valuable coin you need to search in volume. Many here posting exciting finds search hundreds of dollars in low denomination coinage and thousands of dollars of higher denominations a week/month. If you broaden your search to include variety and error coins your yields on keepers will greatly improve. On that note you can find valuable coinage doing lower volume searching that might better fit your budget. Some here do a steady few rolls a week and produce fun finds...and occasional exciting finds. I got a Mercury dime out of a customer wrapped roll of cents. Lucky find. Some dime searchers go for long runs before finding one. Point being is that some times being in the right place at the right time has more to do with things than steady searching. Good luck on the hunt!

Are you in CRH for the fun of it or for the buck. You will not get rich on roll searching. I have looked through a few cents in my day and the most valuable find is around $200 book value so I have not retired yet John1

Juxtaposing your finest find against the millions searched, it can be used by the rest of us to set realistic expectations. It's truly difficult to find the 'super-find' as some have done (cents: 1955DDO, 1969S DDO, 1992D CAM, etc.). Those are truly amazing finds. But we also see a nice variety of step-finds along the way: Shield nickel, 1972 DDOs, double ear LMCs, WAMs). As long as the CRH enthusiast sets realistic expectations, then the disappointments will be fewer and the fun more plentiful.

Well said, Rackster. Since I do quite a large volume of coins, I expect to find some decent stuff sometimes. I know by random chance I'll run into some War Nickels, Buffalos, Silver Dimes and Halves, and some pre-40 Cents. I never go in expecting to find the really good stuff. That makes those finds that much better when they actually do happen. My 1918-D and 1927-S Buffalos, AU-55 1939-D Jefferson, 1982-P "crescent moon" MAD dime, CH BU 1982-P no FG half, and the 1909 V.D.B. wheatie I just found are prime examples. I also can't stress enough the importance of really hitting those veins when you run into them. If you're finding a lot of War Nickels, silver dimes, or wheat cents from you main bank for example, buy more of those specific kinds of rolls of coins from them. If you're not finding many, change it up and go to different branch. Maximize your chances as much as possible. Doing this has given me lots of extra War Nickels and Wheat Cents, and my prized 1939-D AU nickel among other things.
