Maybe this should be in another section but I suspect it will be of interest mostly to Canadians. It's almost comical...charges include theft, laundering the proceeds of crime, possession of stolen property and breach of trust. Judge Doody? All we need is arresting officer Dudley Do-Right. http://ottawacitizen.com/news/local...-judge-hears

Kind of the problem with the RCM, doesn't even want to acknowledge a security problem inhouse, but like the recent Ottawa RCNA having 2 armed guards at the RCM booth for what? As in this story it took a smart bank employee to start the process and seems the RCM is unhelpful in fining out how the gold left the mint.

"In fact, I would submit the Mint doesn't even know if anything is missing." You would think he might have gone to a different town, perhaps a different mall, to cash in the gold. Maybe he was a prospector, cashing in his panning. Wonder what the real total was.

I would imagine that many of the double headed and other "Mint Sports" that have been secreted from the various Mints around the World were hidden in a similar fashion

If he took it out that way, I hope he laundered it before cashing it in!

I've noticed that the 2016 Gold Maples on ebay have a funny smell to them.

Yes even made it to the Washington Post, making light of the RCM's crack security measures, hate to be an RCM employee right now as they announced more security cameras pointed where?

http://news.nationalpost.com/news/c...n-his-lockerAppalling," was the conclusion of defence lawyer Gary Barnes, who described the Crown's case as an underwhelming collection of circumstantial evidence. "This is the Royal Canadian Mint, your Honour, and one would think they should have the highest security measures imaginable," Barnes said in his closing submission. "And here the gold is left sitting around in open buckets." ------- Had not the theft raised suspicions at the bank, where it then got reported to the RCMP, otherwise by the time RCM ever discovered it I'd bet it would have been quietly dealt without charges, swept under the rug. Govt operations have a tendency to not air their dirty laundry especially involving their own lapses of internal controls. And given RCM apparently knew nothing, one can't help but wonder how many other employees were in the business of laying golden eggs as well. The story about this guy who got caught makes it appear he was not overly brilliant in covering up his entire plot.

This cast of characters could probably do a better job of security...

It now makes me wonder if the "Golden Goose" belonged to an employee at the King's Royal Mint....
