If so .. how ....

I have been sitting home today .. listing to some roofers
work on my roof. I know hot right ..

Gave me a lot of time to make some post this morning.

They left for lunch, so I went and met my wife for lunch.

After lunch I was really close to a coins shop

So they had some shiny stuff that came in ..
How could I say no ....

Do-You-Ever-Get-Your-Collection-Organized

How old do you think this folder is?

Do-You-Ever-Get-Your-Collection-Organized

And this .. keep it together .. or put the coins in 2X2's and
tubes.

Back .. I find it hard to get my collection organized ..
I guess because I keep getting coins ..

I might have to take a vacation from buying coins ..
But not sure if it would help.

Any thoughts
Rest in Peace

No, it's always going to be a work in progress.

I've decided not to buy any more coins until I select some things to sell or give away and everything I decide to keep gets properly labeled and put away.

I wonder how long my resolve will last.

I hope the roof gets done in a day or two. The noise is maddening.

i would take the coins out and put them in 2x2's. as the older folders may contain sulfur that damage the coins. I found this out the hard way.

Narrow your focus on what you really want to collect. Sell the coins that do not meet your collecting goals, and use the money to up grade or purchase the collectable target coins and everything will fall into place. Selling coins will also make you a better buyer of coins, and the quality of your overall collection will improve.

At one time I had my collection 100% organized and very neat looking. That was when I was about 10 years old and had just started collecting. Ever since then I have been about 50% organized. D'OH!

I dont think that only buying the right select coins is the only way
to be organized.

Of course if I sold,my collection and bought one 50k coin than I would be very
organized..

I do buy a very wide variety of coins, but I am confident over 90% of
the coins I am buying are bought at a very good price. I have been
working at a local coin shop for over five years. That's five year of
buying and selling coin. The snapshot of my collection that is posted
on CCF may not be the whole story.

I am not a high end coin collector. I am more the average guy collector.

What I was getting at with this post, is the difficulties of keeping a very
large collection organized.

Here on CCF, a thread can sometimes be like a big brainstorming session.
I do get a lot of good ideas on how to organize a collection.

I do understand everyone has their own idea on how to collect.

I wonder if Louis E. Elisburg had trouble keeping his collection organized.

I keep mine really organized or I will buy something I already have plus I'm a bit of a organization freak. I collect what I call OFEC common world coins(some silver). I put them in 2x2s, print out labels and organize them by country as listed in Krause in Lighthouse binders.

My duplicates (because I sometimes buy bulk lots)I keep in small coin envelopes with the country written on them. I keep those in the 9" red coin boxes (alphabetically of course)

I have no problem organizing my 53 year collection or should I say hoard . my only problem now is space . I completely ran out of areas to store my coins .
Most of my coins are in plastic tubes and labeled ,then I have a lot of coins in 2x2's placed in cardboard boxes , also a lot of coins mainly small cents to half dollars in 3-ring loose leaf binders . and last but not least a lot of Whitman albums for my better grade Wheaties 09-40-pds and 41-58-pd .

I've only been collecting about 5 years and I already have a problem. I started out with red boxes because that's what I saw the guys at my coin club bringing every month. But those were the ones they brought to trade or sell.

I found I didn't ever look at my coins in the boxes so I switched to notebooks with pockets for Saflips or 2X2's. I like those a lot more.

I still have problems with the odd stuff -- like I have some proof sets in boxes and a prestige set and those baseball coins in boxes. All that stuff gets put into drawers where they just sit. I really like those things -- but they seem to just get put away and they just about never come out.

1965-D Lincoln Cent. Nice.

You know it was printed before the Coinage Act of 1965 was taken into consideration.

It is the demarcation between Wheat and Memorial cents.

Of course I get it organized. Just to find out that I want stuff adjusted or that I forgot that one piece or I buy new coins so I have to start all over again.

Nah, as we don't have shiny pre-made albums like you have Dansco and so, organizing a coin collection lasts as long as the hobby itself, I guess. It's a bit like organizing LEGO pieces. That's also a job that never ends.

Somehow a Sisyphusian task, I'd say.

Good catch Jbuck

--------------------------------
It seems like when I come up with a good plan, my collection
grows .. and as was posted earlier .. space becomes a big problem. I even boxed up four boxes of coins recently,
just to get out of site .. out of mind.

This past year I thought .. just buy a Dansco for every
type of coin I might ended up with, so I would have a place.
That helped some. Most all the modern albums are full, the
ones that are not are just duplicates I have started.
Some of the classics are down to needing a few coins.
Ones like the three Barbers are over half filled.

It is the bulk coins that are harder to control.
On my next order to Wizard I will have to pick
up some more boxes and tubes.

But that takes me back to storage problems.

Examples
I pulled out all the cent coins .. for this picture.
The roll boxes are now full, I figured out cent rolls
do work in nickel roll boxes. I had extra of them.

Do-You-Ever-Get-Your-Collection-Organized

Dollars .. I have full two album set and date set album.
For over flow dollars I was putting them into a Dealer
stock book. It has 8 pages and holds 12 2X2's per page.
It is full. I am thinking of starting another dealer stock
book and split out Morgan and Peace dollars. Or maybe start
a roll box for silver dollars .. but the only boxes I have
seen for dollar tubes are 500 coin boxes. (Ouch)

If your coins were mainly lower grade, I would suggest buying a large wooden chest and dumping them all in like a pirate would do. But since the overwhelming majority of your collection seems to be uncirculated, I think you're taking the best approach with the tubes for the large amount of duplicates and the dealer stock album for nice coins in 2x2s. If I were you I might also put slabs in a similar album for consistency and just have lots of albums with 2x2s/1.5x1.5s/slabs as they are easiest to look through.
