I found this 1988-P Jefferson while CRH yesterday ... the host coin is likely AU with significant luster and the reverse contains some impressive die cracks ... appearing as 'lighting strikes' on Monticello.

The overall coin:

1988-P Jefferson nickel (AU) - Reverse Die Cracks

1988-P-Jefferson-'Lightning-Strike'-Die-Cracks

Here is the best photo I can get of the reverse with my point-and-shoot setup:

1988-P Jefferson Reverse - Lighting Strike die cracks

1988-P-Jefferson-'Lightning-Strike'-Die-Cracks

There are actually four die cracks ...

The most obvious in my photos begins at L of PLURIBUS and continues to the dome of Monticello where it splits into three separate cracks ... very similar to my eye of a lightning strike on the dome.

Although difficult to see in my photo, that same crack continues from the base of Monticello ... passing between the MO of MONTICELLO and through the FI of FIVE.

To the right of the dome, there is a very deep die crack that begins below the M of UNUM and strikes the top of Monticello.

To the right of that crack is a fourth ... visible in hand but not in my poor photographic record.

I'm of the view that this particular reverse die did not strike too many more coins before it was replace.

Thoughts?

David

Pretty sure that's a die clash. Someone should do an overlay

Here is a clash overlay:
1988-P-Jefferson-'Lightning-Strike'-Die-Cracks
1988-P-Jefferson-'Lightning-Strike'-Die-Cracks
They are not die cracks.

Thanks coop!
I've nearly a full roll of this particular clash.
They're quite exciting when you have a full head outline on rev.w/horizontal lines through the center of the obv.

Very nice Clash. Could you post the one that shows it on the obverse too?

Thanks to all for the input ... don't know why I was not thinking of a die clash.

Coop overlay matches perfectly with what can be seen on the coins reverse ... although no evidence of the clash on the obverse.

Appreciate everyone's help.

Sometimes the die marriage is broken because of a breakdown of a die in the pair. The obverse die maybe a different one, or they neglected to polish the reverse die? Or the reverse die may have been left over from another break up of dies? That is definitely a die clash on that reverse die.
