A colorful example, about 60 x 90 mm in size, printed on somewhat heavier paper stock than was usual, and apparently serving a dual purpose as a bit of promotion for Altenau (located in the Harz mountains of Lower Saxony) as a recreational/vacation destination.

Even with my college German having become extremely rusty, the boosterism aspect of this note is pretty evident. One bit I was comfortable translating reads (more or less), "So don't wait until the morning, come to beautiful Altenau!"

That's a lovely note. I like the bold colors and the landscape. The bear paws, however, well, I just don't know about those. Kind of odd. There must be some legend that would explain the bear paws and tools.

The origin of this imagery is known, but the symbolism of the tools being held by bear claws has no explanation so far as I can determine.

Thanks for the link.

The bear claws certainly make for an interesting picture.

Since 1921, the Harz has has gone through some hard times. The Nazis extablished underground factories there for the manufacture of rockets using slave labor. Following WWII, the area fell within the Soviet Zone of Occupation and was used as a base for intelligence gathering activities, which largely choked off any tourism.

Since German reunification, the region has remained underdeveloped and chronically depressed economically, although there's recently been an effort to make it a center for the development of green energy technologies.

Interestingly, the websites I found regarding travel to the Harz don't even mention Altenau.

See: http://www.uncommon-travel-germany....he-harz.html

And: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTop...Germany.html

Altenao seems to have become very much an unremarkable backwater in today's Germany.
