This 1889 Morgan dollar is a long shot gamble, long odds on a common-date, everyday workhorse nobody would ever pick to win with not much of a payout if it did somehow win, but for a bet of $20, why not. I'd rather put a $20 bill here than on a scratch-off lottery ticket or a few Powerball numbers.

Coin does have a couple of issues - a pretty noticeable hit on the cheek, a planchet or lamination flaw on the reverse at the eagle's neck; toning that makes me wonder...a bit of circulation, or not? AU? MS? I'm also betting based on the seller's pictures, and the seller's not a coin seller very often from what I can tell.

My "bet" is AU53-AU55'ish, original toning, perhaps details damage, but not entirely unattractive for a couple bucks over junk silver prices. Could this be a sleeper MS62-MS63?

What say you, CCF graders?

Great deal, but too many hits and a little rub is visible above her ear and highpoints. AU58. Now if there were a little "CC" on the reverse you'd have a monster.

If I scored an 1889CC for $20 in this condition I'd be on a plane to Vegas right now with an empty savings account and a suite booked at the Bellagio.

I'll agree with AU55 and it's well worth the admission price.

AU55 - nice coin for a album. If you are looking at grading and flipping, you will lose money.

Got it in hand today. What I thought was some sort of planchet flaw on the reverse at the eagle's neck was really just two dark toning lines (there are a couple other dark toning lines.) It's a VAM 12, mundane. Toning is actually fiery red towards the periphery with some bluish green areas around the neck, overall, really attractive, luster is strong and cartwheels around nice -- but the cheek hit is pretty noticeable even if not very deep, and she's definitely seen circulation: I'd say AU55 is good and agree with CCF! Here's a couple of photos, although they will not show the toning well (I have an impossible time trying to shoot toned coins.)
