Hi everyone, I just acquired this East Asian cash coin. However, the characters on the obverse are not matching up with varieties of 18 and 19th century Chinese or Japanese coins I am familiar with. Any help IDing this cash coin would be appreciated!

I think you're not going back far enough. It looks like a cash of the Ming Emperor Chong-zhen 1628-1644, or it's a rebel copying his style. That should point you in the right direction.

The Emperor's name was Si Zong, Chong Zhen was the reign title.

There are several reverse designs. The top of the reverse is probably blank but could be a small circle. (It's probably not a dot because the Tong on the obverse only has one dot.)

If the reverse is blank: KM#55.1. Hartill 20.235 or 20.248 depending on the size of the coin. Probably .248.

Bacchus2 & bjherbison- Thanks for the help! I had hoped that this was an earlier coin, but I really am not as familiar with cash from prior to the late 17th century.

Any ideas as to the vertical lines on this coin? Just PMD, or something else?

Yes, PMD. If the coin came out of the mold like that it would have gone back into the melting pot.

File marks. They are quite common on Ming and Ming Rebel issues.

TypeCoin971793- Interesting! Was this sort of filing done to swipe metal from the coin or did it have some other function?
