I know there must be a good book on the Lady Liberty coins that were first minted in 1916. I am thinking of the Mercury dime, LSQ and LWH dollar. A good book on this subject and one on 19th century gold USA coins would be good.

Roger Burdette's Renaissance of American Coinage 1916-1921 discusses the three silver coins.

Used copies can be found on Amazon.

Burdette has also written Renaissance of American Coinage 1905-1908 and Renaissance of American Coinage 1909-1915.

I enjoyed reading U.S. Liberty Head $20 Double Eagles: The Gilded Age of Coinage by Bowers and Galiette. This book discusses the coin but also what was happening during that year.

There's one used copy on Amazon for $34.99 + shipping.

You might check with the ANA Library. If you are a ANA member you can check out books from the library. The people there go out of their way to help and answer questions.

No, it's a lot more than a price guide.

Volume #18 in Whitman's best-selling Bowers Series covers three of the most popular U.S. coins: Mercury dimes, Standing Liberty quarters, and Liberty Walking half dollars. These classic silver coins were minted between 1916 and 1947, an era spanning two world wars and the Great Depression. Now the Dean of American Numismatics, Q. David Bowers, gives collectors a single-volume study of technical, historical, and market-oriented advice and insight. Contents cover how to grade your collection, tips on smart buying, current retail values, and a thorough analysis of each date and mintmark. Lavishly illustrated in full color, the book features high-resolution enlargements for important overdates and other die varieties. Mintages, specifications, certified population data, and other details add to the book s importance as a standard reference. Colorful essays set the coins in the context of the time period. This Guide Book will deepen your appreciation and make you a smarter buyer and collector of these popular U.S. coins.

I got the Bowers book via Amazon. The coins I really like are the SLQ and the LWH, but how can you not included the Mercury dime in this trio? I have a Mercury set short of the 16-D and a LSQ set short of the 1916. Before I stop collecting I will get those two coins in at least fine condition. I have a full set of LWH dollars and when I get all my sets completed I will work on improving the LWH set first. It was difficult to say the least filling the LWH dollar set in the early years of the set with coins that were above the grade of VG. All I was asking for at that time was a full date. Most of my LWH's are worn and pretty flat for the years 1916 through 1923 which is where most of the money shots are located. Anyone can find a 1942 in EF or AU condition, but try and find a 1921-S in that condition?
