I've been dropping by all the coin shops in my area, to get a feel for dealers. Yesterday I visited a strange little shop. People were very nice, but the young man who waited on me, once I got him chatting, said a few things that raised flags. (The thing that really alerted me was when he prosed on about how to make cleaned coins not look cleaned--unless I miss my guess, you'll see the irony.)

Anyway, on these initial visits, I want to make a purchase if I take up much of their time, just so they don't think I'm out to pick their brains for free.

So I saw this SL Quarter for $13 and picked it up. I'm so new to this I don't know much, but it seemed like a surprisingly low price. I figured what the hey-I would either end up with a nice deal or a fairly cheap education.

Which do you think I got?

Looks pretty nice to me - I don't think it has been cleaned, certainly not harshly cleaned. Nice eye appeal and a better grade on a common date. Not sure what these go for so don't know if $13 is a good deal but seems ok to me.

What made me think it's been cleaned is that this coin has NO luster (it's shiny where it's worn, but the fields, even immediately around the letters and images, are just a dull gray). Until I took it out of the flip, I almost thought it was a cheap plastic knockoff.

OK, so my Mega Red says at AU50, a fair price would be $110. Did I just stumble into THAT good a deal?

Prices in RB are way too high. Check the bay for sold values. It is a nice looking coin.

Most definitely cleaned...as you've stated, it has NO luster remaining. Probably dipped, re-dipped, and then dipped again. With all of that being said, it's still a nice coin...and $13 was more than a fair deal for it. Good pickup.

If you don't mind educating me, LoLlife (geez, I'm using your handle and feel like I'm insulting you!), what would you say is a fair price for the coin?

Also, are PCGS values more accurate? I used to value heavy equipment for ports of authority. We were told to steer clear of auction sites as far as sales info. First off, asking prices are not what they actually get, and also if bidding is competitive, people tend to pay more than the item is worth. It looks like PCGS does use auction prices, but develops an average of paid prices over a fairly long period of time. But even then it would be different than what coin shops are probably getting.

Nice coin ... it is always hard to grade coins from pictures.

To me the coin looks like it might have had a old cleaning.

I feel this coin would easily grade XF and maybe AU.

Greysheet is
VF $27
XF $36
AU $85

A dealer would offer less than these prices, and try to sell for more
then these prices. If a dealer feels the coin is cleaned, they might
drop a grade in the prices.

If cleaned real bad .. it could drop to the silver value.
Rest in Peace

You got a great deal at $13, especially with all four digits visible.

What does this coin weigh in grams .... call me suspicious. Many of the Chinese fakes bear a dull gray, XF+ details look. Also, is it attracted to a magnet?

Beyond the look of the coin, I'm curious why a shop would sell this coin at such a bargain basement price. If genuine, you made a great buy.

I agree with John1 that ebay is one of the best resources to determine what your coin is really worth. Any serious numismatist should be familiar with searching sold items (not ones for sale). That being said, I don't think RedBook and PCGS guides are so outrageously overpriced that they would overvalue a coin by 10x. I find them to be anywhere from a little overpriced (and even right on the money occasionally) to upwards of double the going rate. Since the Greysheet is what all the shops use to determine their prices it is nice to get from time to time.

I'm certain you got a good deal on this one but whether it was simply a nice pick or a homerun I can't say.

Recently sold. Make comparisons, looks like a decent score.

Agree washed out appearance is from over-dipping. Still a decent value.
