Numismatic News - After many months of media lead up and public education the Bank of England released its new polymer £5 note on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Winston Churchill, the man who declined Queen Elizabeth's offer to become Duke of London, now features on the back of a circulating British bank note. The bank's public education program has been massive, particularly since the fiver's official launch on June 2. An entire website is devoted to the new note: http://www.thenewfiver.co.uk. The information posted there, including the video, is well worth a browse. And for collectors of paper money ephemera, the BoE has a wealth of free-of-charge materials concerning the new fiver and its other notes. Check out the Bank's web page "Educational Material - Know Your Banknotes." These items are available in both English and Cymraeg (Welsh). Read the Entire Article Subscribe to Numismatic News

Nice info! I thought this was interesting... "The former paper £5 notes cease to be legal tender in May 2017. After that month paper £5 notes can still be exchanged at the BoE."

Very interesting from a psychological point of view. That people believe there will be another one of these notes, that because one person said they're worth 50,000 that now they're worth 50,000, it's bizarre.

I've always loved the colorful English notes, and this is just a piece of art. What a beauty. Though, as a collector, English notes in UNC condition were always too expensive to get from dealers... Even at the money shows... Oh well... Hopefully, I will have enough money to get a hold of a bundle of these at a good price for my website.

A family friend in England sent me one in November, and it's an absolutely gorgeous note. Wish the US would take note (quite literally)...

In just two days (5 May 2017) paper £5 notes will cease to be legal tender and will no longer be accepted by shops.
The new polymer £10 note featuring Jane Austen will enter circulation in summer 2017. The new polymer £20 note featuring JMW Turner will enter circulation by 2020. There are currently no plans to replace the £50 note featuring Boulton and Watt and BOE will announce the material for future £50 notes in due course.
Many people simply assume that the British government will simply stop producing the 50 pound note.

On 18 July 2017 the Bank will mark the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's death, by unveiling the new £10 note featuring the renowned writer. The event will take place at Winchester Cathedral, where Austen was buried in 1817.
Stock of Notes in Circulation at end-February 2017 (Millions of notes)
£5 - 382 £10 - 801 £20 - 2168 £50 - 312
Production of £5 polymer notes was 440 million notes. Production of the £50 paper notes was also 440 million notes from 1 Feb 2011 through 1 Feb 2015.
As no new £50 paper notes have been produced in the last two fiscal years, many people believe that the last of the current paper notes will be issued, then they will be destroyed as they wear out with no new production of either paper or polymer notes occurring. The presumption is they will be formally withdrawn in 5-10 years.
The Bank of England is investigating issuing digital currency.
