My first time so please excuse any mistakes. I just purchased an fairly expensive coin. 1807 $5 MS64+ Bust right The reverse die is rotated. Does it decrease the value of the coin? Thank you Danny

I am brand new to collecting coins. I am all over the spectrum in buying coins. Seems like right now everything is weak. I want to purchase a Indian head $2.50 MS 63 set. Is it a time to wait ? I purchased a 1807 $5 MS 64+ with a rotated reverse. Is that a problem? My point is I know so little I seem to be getting in trouble buying coins. Thanks for any help. Danny

If you're new to the hobby, I would highly suggest sticking to cheaper stuff before you buy expensive pieces. To get your question answered, you should post a new topic with pictures in the US classic variety and error forum.

Rotated reverses generally do not detract from a coin's value, but depending on the severity of the rotation, might actually increase its value to the right collector.

Thank you for your comments!! I moved the photos of the coin to another area. I thought errors in coins and can no longer find the photos. Yes I am older than 2 years of age. I am embarrassed but not really computer literate either. Give me a few times and I will get better. anyone know where my photos went? I apologize again! Danny

Is your coin graded by a TPG (i.e. grading company) and in a plastic slab? Given that you are very new to this and buying expensive coins you should only get them if graded and encased (and by one of the three main grading companies). I'm guessing it is graded given you said a specific grade, but I wanted to check. You would take a huge financial risk buying coins raw as there are a lot of counterfeits out there. At the very least you should get the Red Book price guide. That tends to price on the high side but will let you know if the coin you are looking at is in the ballpark on price. I know you say you aren't great with computers but if you really want to know if you are getting good prices or not you will need to learn to search ebay and the major coin auction websites like Heritage or Great Collections. You can see what similar coins sold for. Of course we are happy to help here too if you are looking at a coin and want to ask us if we think it is a good price.

If you are interested in collecting a set of $2.50 Indian Head Gold, I would recommend you purchase a copy of the "Handbook of 20th United States Gold Coins" by David Akers 2nd Edition. You can find a used copy on ebay for about $15. All graded MS63 coins are not the same as some will be high end for the grade and other low end for the grade and you want to try to buy the high end coins as the high end coins will have a little more value and be easier to resell. It would benefit you to work on your grading skills, so you can tell the difference between MS62, MS63 or MS64.

The pictures you posted on the other thread show an outstanding coin, PCGS graded MS-64+. The minor rotation shouldn't affect the value at all. Did you just purchase this at Heritage this week?

You posted your photos in the error section onto another thread - "New variety Buffalo nickel 1930-S D/S verification?" You can click on edit and delete your photos on the other thread and add them to this thread. Nice coin.

Yes I purchased the 1807 in the Heritage auction this last Monday. I am stuck right now as every coin like this looks so neat I will be broke by the end of the year! Thanks you for all the kind replies. Danny

Why did you decide to start collecting coins? The answer to this question is a guide to what to collect and how much you want to spend.
