I have decided to start an Ike dollar collection. My 1st one is going to be a 1974-S Proof as this is my birth year.

My question is what are the black slabs? I know they are 40% Silver Proofs. Are they GSA coins like Morgans in similar slabs?

Thanks again...Mont.

The mint made "brown" and "blue Ike's basically for collectors. They were 40% silver like you said and the Brown Ike is the proof version of the coin. This one comes in the hard black case and it was shipping in a brown wood grain (gotta love the 70's) box with a gold eagle seal on the. The blue Ike was the business strike and it was shipped in a blue envelope sealed in cellophane with a blue token with the mint logo on it. I believe the blue Ike sold for around $3 and the brown Ike sold for around $10.

The original hard case the proof coin is in doesn't offer much protection from the environment, so before you buy one look them over really good. Some are still blast white, but many seem to have taken on a milky haze as they have toned over the years. On the other hand some have turned really nice shades of blue and those may actual command a small premium.

In the end though this set is very easy to put together and unless you are trying for a top pop registry set, it's very affordable to complete. If you get addicted to the series though be aware top pop coins can cost you a small fortune.

Good luck in your quest OP! I love the large dollars, and I think you'll be very pleased once you have the collection finished.

I buy all the cheap Ike's still in the govt packaging I can for some reason. Doesn't matter of eye appeal or not, I always find cheap ones at my LCS. I guess they stock 'em because they know I'll buy 'em!

I love those Ike's ...
I think you will like collecting the series.

Black slabs are after market. If I remember right, most times
they are Bradford Exchange or PCS.

As mentioned above, the mint released the 1971 - 1974 40%
Ike's in either a blue envelope or a Brown box.

Thanks guys!

I currently have a bid on a 1974-S Brown Box Ike. Whats up with the blue toning on most of them? Is this discoloration due the the material the slab is made from or is this just how they tone in these slabs?

Edit: Just reread davec13s' reply. and answered my own question above...DOH!...got caught skimming the page again.
