Peace dollars are either really nice or barking dogs and there are rarely examples that fall in between. When I saw the obverse I was thinking EF-40. When I saw the reverse I cringed and down graded to "no thanks". There are SO many things wrong with that reverse.

Unless you are getting this really cheap (if you are buying it) I'd wait for a better example.

I'm more concerned about the rarity of this coin .
I bought it cheap in my opinion.

Well, it is a tough date, but must agree with mox - don't like the reverse at all.

It is a harder date coin.

It does have some problems.

If your happy with it, and you got it at a good price.

I'd net grade it a VF max, obverse is better reverse is a fine grade. You can find nicer examples, there really isn't much of a price gap for this coin from good to au. It gets pricey past ms63

Agree - this will be a tough one to move on at some point. I think you'll always be disappointed when you look at the reverse.

You can get a 1928 Peace dollar in AU for $300. The 1921, 27,27-S,27-d and the 1934 all have mintage of just about one million or less than one million. You can get them all in MS63 for less than $500. These are the screaming buys to me. There are 12 Peace dollars with mintage of less than 2 million. Most can be had in some MS sort of condition for $200 except the 34-S, 28, 21 or 27-S. Not many Morgans with mintage of one million in any sort of MS condition that are so cheap. One that baffles me is the 1899 Morgan with mintage of 330,846 that can be had in MS64 for about $350. The 1881CC also seems cheap to me with mintage of just 296K and you can get one in MS64 for $600? Each one of these coins has some sort of unique history that probably explains price differentials. The 84-s and 86-0 have a story to explain the huge jump in price from AU to MS except I don't know the story. I just see the price. What is the story?

I think with Morgans it isn't just mintage but survival. If 1 million were minted and 1 million kept in storage bags they are more common than if 10 million were minted and 9.9 million melted down.

Jax

You are right about survival with Morgans and Peace dollars. When is the last time you saw a Peace dollar in circulation? I think there has been prejudice against Peace dollars because they only lasted a few years. Collectors love Standing Liberty quarters and LWH dollars, but Peace dollars get the shaft. Try filling a full date/mint set of Morgans. It will cost you many thousands of dollars. You can collect all the other 20th century silver coins for a few thousand dollars, but Morgans will cost you even in lousy condition.

It looks genuine. I'm not familiar with the market of these at all to give you an accurate value.

I was able to get my dad an NGC UNC Details (obverse had been wiped enough to disturb the luster) for less than $200. That was two years ago. Take that information however you want to.

I got 1921 and 1927 Peace dollars in MS60 today. I wanted a 27-S and 27-S as well but ran out of money. The 27 and 27-S have mintage of less than a million as does the 1934. The Peace dollars day is coming!
