After a couple of weeks I had the opportunity to go back to the wooded trails in Lake Park just north of downtown Milwaukee. I dropped my daughter off for classes at UW-Milwaukee and then had two and a half hours to hunt.

We've had a lot of rain over the weekend, so the trails down the hills were muddy and slick. It was in the low 70s, cloudy and humid with lots of mosquitoes. I stepped on a bee hive and got stung a couple of times shortly after I started detecting.

But it was a good hunt so I don't mind.

My best find was a 1906 Indian Head cent, the second one I've found in the park this fall. I was working along a narrow trail in the woods near the top of the hill when I got a signal about four feet off the trail. The coin was sitting right on the surface. Coins on these trails usually aren't more than an inch or two down due to rain run off, I would guess.

I also found a 1937 and a 1940 Lincoln Cent and a small silver ring with a .925 hallmark. All in all, I found nineteen coins in the woods during my hunt and a quarter and cent right by my car when I parked.

I have about a month and a half left to detect before the frost sets in so I hope to get back there a couple more times.

Nice day ... silver and a Indian head.

It always amazes me when finding old coins right on top.
A lot nicer than digging them out of tree roots

In August I found an 1854 Seated Liberty half dime right on the surface as well.

I put up a post about that coin.

Hillside coins often get washed down the hill or out of the dirt on the angle of the hill. This one was just about at the top of the hill.

I did hit me tonight that I'm the first person to hold or see that coin in about a century! That's a pretty neat feeling.

Yeah, I can only imagine. But it is one of the reasons that I like old circulated coins. I like to think about where they've been -- pockets, purses, cash registers, ....wherever.

I guess we know where your coin has been for a lot of the past century, if not all of it. It's worth noting on the holder.
