My best guess is that it got squeezed. The color makes me think it happened outdoors.

Texas cent. Put it between two straps of leather & bang away.It can stretch out the planchet without affecting the devices very much. In the process the thin layer of copper comes off.IMOA

Didn't even notice the size difference .I only noticed the copper plating missing. It is a so-called Texas Cent.

I didn't realize that the plating fell off when they got squeezed.
