To get all the coins I need for my albums I buy uncirculated coin sets from the US Mint and then take them out and add to my coin albums.

Was wondering if anyone else does this also?

There are many who have. I have not. However, I have done this with proof sets.

Yes.

In fact, I have two complete sets of all proof, silver proof, mint and peripherals (1999 SBA Proof, Silver Ikes, etc.).

One is my permanent one. The other is my extra set, in case I want to do it all over again.

However, I also keep one uncirculated set with proofs and one circulated set without proofs of each series. I only break open mint sets for the fully uncirculated set with proofs.

I always try to get two sets. One to keep and one to break open for albums.

I always PLAN to do that, but have yet to crack any sets to ACTUALLY do it.

I do the same as "Hozer": Buy 2 sets, one for the books and another to keep in the set package. I always check and see if there is any quality difference between the sets and use the lesser one for the books. One year one of the sets' corner got bent, so that one went in the books.

I have been doing this for about 10 years and so the last 10 years coins are in top-notch condition.

I also have a "Circulation" set, mostly 2x2's but a couple are books that contain coins found in circulation or roll hunting. For coins that predated my purchase of Mint Sets if I find one in better shape than the collection coin I will swap it out of the book and put the original in a 2x2. The exception is for key dates, those are saved in 2x2 (if not slabbed) and a filler is used, either a lesser condition of that date/mint or a common date with a red "X" on it to remind me I have it but it is too valuable to be in a book.

I have a hard time breaking open slabs of any kind. Is this the only way I will be able to fill some of the holes in an Ike album. Are the silver proofs only available in Brown box slabs?
