I'm a big fan of low-population Liberty gold coins. Some of these are under-appreciated as to rarity and on occasion may be purchased at reasonable cost, especially if they are low grade. Here is a typical example: an 1870-S half eagle, well-circulated and certified by NGC. Mintage is just 17,000 and PCGS estimates that less than 100 examples survive in all grades. What are your comments and grading opinions?   |

VF20 to me. The obverse issues could have it at VF Details though and if netted then F15. Would be a very nice buy for under $1,000.

NGC gave this coin a straight F-12 grade. There are no serious marks given the overall level of wear. Color is pleasing and surfaces look original. My cost was $625 in April 2016 and I think it was money well spent.  |

Great looking circulated gold and scarce to boot. I agree that you can pick off great underappreciated coins with the right searching.

I agree .. the wear on the two coins are very similar .. for such a difference
in grades.
I would have to wonder if they looked at a couple small hits on the 70S.
and knocked the grade down.

The VF30 grade on your second piece is very liberal. I could see stretching it to 25 but no higher.
Your 1870-S is conservatively graded and perhaps net graded a tad for the issues at the obverse center. A solid buy at $625.
