As some of you know, Ive been putting together a set of BU Washington quarters for about 3 years. I am now nearing the end of the set and I have about 24 coins left, all of which are at the top of page 2 and on page 1 (I use a Dansco 8140). I currently have the 1932-D and the 1932-S (both are graded VG-10 by NGC) but I have a problem. As close as I am to finishing the set, these early quarters are TOUGH. I'm thinking about saving some money by going with AUs and XFs for the harder ones, but would AU and XF coins kill the look of the album when all of the coins in the album now are MS? Keep in mind that I'm a YN who doesn't have a ton of money to spend on coins. Can anyone give me some advice?

Well being a YN you have plenty of time to complete the set in BU. Save up to buy the coins you need one at a time. John 1

You have to decide what is more important, filling the holes or waiting years for you to be able to buy higher grade coins.
It would be easy to buy lower grade coins. Many of these might be bought In the silver melt range.
You will have the rest of your life to either upgrade lower grade coins you buy now .....or the rest of your life to save and purchase the higher Grade coins you want.

I 100% agree with John and GR58. One coin at a time. If you want to get a lower grade one now and change it out later you can. I am also working on an MS set of Washingtons. I have been for over 10 years a little here and a little there and I am 60. All my other sets are very low grade sets but I wanted one MS set of something so I started these. I am now 9 away and not all of them are the "hard" ones. So what if it takes you several more years to finish. You will be so proud of the accomplishment. And I would like to add....for a YN your collection is especially impressive! Congrats!

I don't think XF or AU coins would necessarily kill the look of the album, especially if you found some sort of logical dividing line that said, for example, all coins 1940 or later or 1945 or later are BU, earlier are XF/AU.
I would try to figure how much you have to spend per month on average on coins, how long you are willing to focus on the set and try to figure out a reasonable way to complete it in the time you want. You can always upgrade individual coins as you get more funds in the future.

Do the empty spaces drive you nuts? Do you upgrade the coins you have and sell the spare coins?
I ask these questions because the only album I ever wanted to fill (so far) was quarters 1932 - 1964 -- all circulated. Well, I did that and I thought I would upgrade from time to time. I haven't. So basically I learned that I am not the type to buy better coins and sell the old coins. I just keep them... I've grown fond of them just the way they are.
My first reaction to this thread was to disagree with John1 -- but then I considered my own situation and now I think that if you should do as he suggests. Wait and save up for the best.

Just curious-- because I have always kept a separate Dansco for circulated and and MS...and never do they mix. Which is why I am asking a question which probably seems pretty dumb.
If you put in a circulated coin now, and then upgrade to an MS later...does "stuff" from the circulated coin stay behind and potentially taint the MS and if so, how to you prevent that? Do you guys avoid this by washing and drying the plastic inserts after you take out the old coin but before you put in the new coin?
I have always been especially weary of upgrading Lincoln wheat cents for this fear.
I would hate for the OP (or myself) to upgrade to a beautiful coin that quickly deteriorates because of the previous coin's residue.

My Washington quarter set while not finished ,consists of EF/AU To mid MS . My grade line is all 1930's will be ef/au and any quarter after that will be AU-58 TO MS . It all has to do with the cost of these coins . I keep them in loose leaf binders in non pvc sheets . I have no problem mixing circs with MS .

Thanks for your opinions everyone! I think that I will have to get XF/AU coins for the tougher dates, and I guess I'll have to upgrade down the line. Also, if anyone wants to see some pics of the set I can post some...

You can always upgrade later. I'd rather have a nice AU58 than a doggy MS60-MS61.
