Well, I finally did it. I went against my collecting philosophy and bought a key date coin. I saw this 1886 nickel on ebay with these pictures, and I thought I'd take a gamble. The green stuff didn't look like verdigris from the pictures.   Got it in hand today, and it looks like my judgement was correct. 99% of the green stuff came off with my fingernail. I will upload better pictures after an acetone bath.   |

The coin had an extended stay in an old leather coin purse.
I have a couple of silver dollars that had the same green gunk buildup that I showed to a local coin store and he said that was the cause.

Nice buy. Probably would have used a Q-Tip and acetone instead of.my fingernail, but still a great score.

If it makes you feel better, that's only a semi-key. I probably would have used acetone. |

1886 is certainly one of three keys for the Liberty nickels, the other two being 1885 and 1912-S. Semi-keys would be 1883 W/Cents, 1888, and 1894. Conditional semi-keys: Not including the 1885/1886/1912-S, the 1888, 1896 and 1912-D are tough to find in higher grades (AU/MS) and carry definite premiums in those grades. I found an 1888 LHN in a junk bin for 50 cents once. Only Fair-2 though. What's considered a semi-key and what isn't is kinda opinionated. I feel comfortable with calling the 1844-O Half Dime a semi-key for the series. Edited by Omegaraptor

That's a smokin' hot deal for $38. I couldn't ever find anything half that decent in that price range when I was looking back in the day.
