I've been looking for a decent Liberty Cap cent for a long time, without success. I recently put in what I thought was a strong bid for an example in a Heritage auction. Final price was almost twice my bid amount. So, when I spotted this coin at our recent Fresno coin show I decided to pull the trigger. It met my basic requirements and for once was reasonably priced. It is in a no-problem NGC holder and has a plain edge. What are your grade opinions? I've tentatively identified it as the common S-78 variety. Can anyone confirm or deny? Thanks!

I'd say F-12. Very nice color and surfaces. I believe S-78 is correct.

I'm gonna shoot the gap and call it a VG-10. I like it at F-12 but I knocked it a couple points for the mark on the reverse. I love the coin and would be proud to own it!!

really nice piece. I'm higher on grade, I have it at F15+. I think the only negative keeping this coin from VF20 is the reverse corrosion.

I think you're right - this could easily make VF-20.

I had a hard time imaging the detail on this coin. Maybe there is too little color difference between fields and devices or something. In hand details appear stronger and there is no significant corrosion, other than that dark spot on T of CENT. I've looked at many extremely expensive higher-grade examples and less expensive coins with poor strike and/or planchet problems. I decided I could accept this piece which features strong date and LIBERTY and solid central detail on the reverse, as well as smooth original surfaces and minimal rim hits. NGC had it at VF-25 which is not out of line based on other slabbed Liberty Caps I've examined. It should satisfy for now, at least!
