Found a 1970-s proof half in a box of half dollars I got from a bank. The coin is in nice shape except for the black spot on the Kennedy's face.
Would acetone be the best hope for the coin?
I don't have the skills to post a picture.

Nice find! Try it - it cannot hurt the coin. Since the coin was in circulation , it is considered an "impaired proof." Also, make sure it is 100% pure acetone. The bottle I use is in the health and beauty dept. at Walmart and inexpensive. Just make sure it is the pure 100^ acetone and not fingernail polish remover that has acetone in it. Fingernail polish remover can have perfumes or dies added that can leave a residue. Soak it for awhile if you need to. Also remember Acetone is an organic solvent, so it might not remove the spot.

Good luck on removing the spot. Doing anything on proof coins can be tough.
It is really hard to offer an opinion with out pictures.
I do hope for the best.

Be patient as you learn to upload pictures - it's worth the effort. Remember you'll have to download your pics to your computer first before you can upload them to the forum.

Excellent! Did it leave anything behind, like a mark or discolouration?

If you look close enough you can see where it was but I decided to remove the coin from the acetone after about 8 hours. Sure not perfect but it does look better.
I hadn't been finding much silver but last week I found an AU 1950=d nickel and this week 3 40% halves including the 1970's. There were also 3 halves with military stickers on them that I hadn't seen before along with 22 NIFC halves.

I am sure it does look better. In some cases, it depends on how long the spot has been "protecting" the metal underneath, compared to the parts left exposed to the environment. Other times the spot will permanently damage the surface. Sometimes, you get lucky.

Great! I am glad the acetone worked out for you. Any chance at some pics?
