Just wondering if anyone might have a clue about what might've happened to this quarter? It weighs only 4.6 or 4.7g. it's slightly thinner and has missing metal pieces out of it? Looks melted kind of? Any information is appreciated thanks

Nitric acid. I used to demonstrate its metal consuming abilities in my Chemistry class with a (common of course) dime, penny, or quarter.

Every time that I see these "acid eaten" coins ,they remind me of my days working for a municipality. On occasion we had to service plugged sewer lines.Quite often coins like these were found in the pipes and manholes.
