1966-Lincoln----Off-Center?

The reverse is unaffected and looks nothing like the obverse.

I'm going to guess here the hammer die was seriously misaligned, and if that's so--not many of these would be run before it was discovered? But-- I'll be interested to hear what the experts say!

Note: you can also see how one side of the coin is noticeably thicker than the opposite edge.

Slightly off-center Lincolns are not unusual. However, when they start to be so great that the edge of the coin moves into a devise, like this one on the date, they seem to start developing added value. Very nice find.

It's not off-center. That would be a coin struck out of collar, and would be equally off-center on the obverse and reverse.

Since the reverse is indicated as normal in the original post, this would be a severely misaligned die strike, which would add quite a bit of value to the coin. Exactly how much I cannot say because I don't know, but I do know it is very scarce to rare and warrants further investigation.

I have four coins in similar condition. They are not as severe, but I have noticed that they are only effected on the obverse. The most interesting of the four has "IN GOD WE TRUST" right on the edge of the coin. I will post pics later.

They are only affected on the obverse because the reverse has to come within the striking cylinder (the collar) to strike the coin. It is part of the anvil. It cannot be misaligned and strike a coin.

I signed up to the coppercoins forum but haven't gotten an e-mail yet. I sent a message to the mods with the pertinent information to subscribe.

The 1966 cent shown would have additional value because technically some of the last digit is missing. This coin is almost as far out of whack as a misaligned obverse die can get.

Minor misaligned dies are very common, ones as far off as the 1966 are less common. Detail being right to the edge as described in one of the posts doesn't ad value to the coin. Detail has o be missing for a misaligned die strike to have anything more than educational value.

Thanks,
Bill
