I got this Morgan dollar (my first one) from stack of random coins that I bought. Lets just say I paid 20$ for it. This is my first try to grade a coin. I'll give it XF40. How wrong am I?

Looks like it has a lot of luster.

Cheek has a lot of rub. On reverse weak strike, breast feathers
are not well struck.

I am thinking MS 60 maybe MS 61

The coin appears to be damaged as the cheek has what may be a gash, but it could be a planchet flaw. I would grade the coin AU Details. If the problem area is a planchet flaw, then, the coin would grade low MS.

I cannot see any wear from those pictures. I would think MS-61.

I would be in the MS-61 camp also, not a too common grade to see on morgans, and grade some more coins, I recommend getting the ANA grading standards book. It will cost you about 17 dollars. I got it for free at a show, but it is a great learning tool

It is in order but it was out of stock. Getting that book in Finland is quite a task. But atleast at this grading case it was good to be wrong.

MS-62. I think the photos make the coin look far worse than it really is.

I must add what made me grade it xf40 was those face scratches/hit marks. I thought it mattered that much. Oh well I hope that ANA grading book arrives soon.

The coin has no visible circulation wear so it's considered mint state. The marks occur when a coin makes contact with others in a mint bag. There are enough of them that, despite strong mint luster, it won't make MS-63 or higher but is good enough to make MS-62 or possibly MS-61 if the marks look bad in hand.

The luster is very strong so it is definitely an MS Morgan.
Very nice price also!
