Hello everyone,

Yesterday I was going through my grandfather's drawer when to my surprise I found this coin! I asked my grandfather about it, but he does not know how he got it or what type of coin it is. Judging by the look of it I'm going to guess it is roman? I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could identify/date it or give any information at all.

Thank you,

Michael

No problem. Here are a few more:

Curious to see if anyone has any concerns about authenticity. Hopefully some of our Roman experts will chime in and say it's fine, but the legend and some of the surface features seem to have some of the traits occasionally seen on cast coins.

Color suggests 'fake', but that may be due to the uncorrected color balance of the picture.
Details look 'mushy', suggesting copy off original.

Has been black waxed to enhance the detail.
Renwax is occasionally used on museum coins to help preserve them and enhance detail. Somewhat frowned on by collectors, including me.

I would really like to look into the edge detail of this piece with a 15x loupe looking for metal distress that comes from striking, or if it indicates non stressed metal casting.
I suspect the latter.

I agree with Bob and Sel that this coin has some areas of concern. For example, I don't see how the letter E in MONETA gets that shape without this being a casting (and therefore fake).

Yep, sorry, but it's a replica. It's not just a "die match" for the one in the fake reports linked to above, but they are both clearly cast copies of the same piece, with the same flaws in the same places (both off-centred in the exact same way, both having the same V-shaped indentation at 9 o'clock on the obverse, etc).

If your grandfather was not a coin collector and/or doesn't remember how he got it, then it's likely to have been a Reader's Digest giveaway gimmick, or something like that.
