Hi, I'm very new here. I'm hoping you can give me your expert opinions. I want to buy my husband an Alexander Jannaeus Lepton coin (widow's mite). It would be nice if it had good details, not all worn down. I've been looking at some on Amazon that are 50-60$ Plus shipping. Is that a fair price in your opinion? I think I'd rather get one that looks nice like that from the start than buy an "uncleaned" coin since it's a gift. I know very little about ancient coins. I definitely want to get him one or two leptons, not the Prutah coin. Thanks so much for any advice you can give.

to CCF. Can't help you with prices but you should know there are a lot of fake ones out there. Be careful. John1

Thanks John1, thanks for the welcome and the warning! That was another one of my concerns - not wanting a fake coin, much less spending a good amount on it. :)

They are pretty much as a rule going to be ugly, poorly struck coins.
Are you wanting the more iconic star/anchor design, or the crossed cornucopiae and legend? The latter is easier to find well struck, and runs much cheaper as well.

Hi Finn235, I don't know. I didn't know there were two types. I want to get him the one that was most likely the coin used by the widow in the Bible and I thought that was the lepton. The only one I've ever seen had an anchor on it. Time to do more research I guess. :)
ETA: The one with the anchor, definitely - after doing a little more research.

@gingercoins, first welcome to CCF. Second, I can't strongly enough support the advice that @echizento gave you about where to purchase this coin. We see a lot of fakes posted here by folks who unwittingly purchased them from fringe coin dealers. I don't sell coins, but I do buy from several of the stores on vcoins. Third, what a great idea for a present!

Thanks Spence! I appreciate all the advice.
This leads to a new question to whoever can tell me about vcoins- do sellers get ratings there? How do I know if a seller I'm considering buying from has a good reputation? Thanks again everyone.

I know of exactly one fake widow's mite, which is a terribly executed replica made by a religious supply company: https://www.christianbook.com/widow...yRoCA03w_wcBOther than that, I don't think I have ever seen a fake one? As already stated, you will pay out the wazoo if you want a lepton that is well-struck with great eye appeal. That's why most people just buy the Prutah and say it's a widow's mite. The price also seems to surge around Christmas. I got a bunch in lots overy the summer; some very cheaply. I think you only need 50 posts to buy from a CCF member? Maybe some of us have one we could sell for a more reasonable price than $50.

Thank you echizento. It was very nice of you to link me to the coins. Finn235, thanks for the extra information. Those replica coins do look like new coins and it's good to know there aren't that many fakes out there (I hope). I like your idea to get my posts up and try to buy from someone here. I'm more comfortable with that option than the others I've seen. Maybe I'll even be able to get two coins that way. We'll see. :) Guess I'd better get posting. Thanks again everyone!!
