I recently found this 2000 South Carolina State Quarter while rummaging through some change. Based on my somewhat limited knowledge this appears to be a cracked die. And when I say cracked I mean thoroughly destroyed! Cracked from top to bottom and again from the 4 o'clock position through to 10 o'clock. A third crack can be seen at about the 5 o'clock position passing through the base of the tree.
I did a quick search for this error but came up blank. I'm wondering if the die fell apart fairly shortly after this pressing resulting in few coins being produced?
I thought I'd share the pics and see if anyone else has any thoughts.
Thanks,
Jon
Edit: Having spent some time looking at the pictures, now I'm not so sure. I initially thought the lines were raised, but I now think they are scratches/gouges. Maybe someone attacked this coin post minting? Any help appreciated.
Ugh!! so disappointed! When I took the pictures it became obvious that they were scratches, it's actually quite hard to tell just looking at the coin itself. Oh well, plenty more coins to search through!
It looks like someone has really attacked this coin, maybe with a screwdriver or something, very odd.
Note the line on your coin is incuse. On a die crack they are raised and end before the rim. Note the example below: The circle before the rim is where the die ends. So the die crack will end before the rim. (rim is the ring around the coin face. not to be confused with edge. the outside part of the coin that is thin)
