Unusual 3 Or M Printed On The Hat -1921 S Morgan Silver Dollar, Help?

Damon Groove New Member United States 3 Posts	Posted 11/10/2016 8:20 pm Hello, My 1921s Morgan silver dollar has a 3 or M printed on the hat. I can't find any errors that match this description. I took it to a coin shop and the Owner said he's never seen anything like it. This 3 or M is very distinct. How rare is this coin and what should I value it at? What VAM is this? paralyse Bedrock of the Community United States 12057 Posts	Posted 11/11/2016 01:01 am It appears to have been tooled out and then engraved, or perhaps sunk with a punch as seen in counterstamped coins. Almost certainly post-mint damage, and not a VAM as it is not a die or hub feature. The only other thing I can think of would be a foreign object/debris strike (a piece of metal or some other object was trapped between the planchet and the obverse die when this coin was struck, and you are seeing the area where the object was impressed upon the planchet) and that seems quite unlikely. If it were a die or hub error, it would have almost certainly been present on more than one coin. Lacking evidence to the contrary, I would value it at melt, around 15-17 bucks.
