TWIMC: A friend of mine has an Iranian coin, circa 1978/9, that has the profile of the Shah on the obverse and a royal coach on the reverse. It is a 5 ounce gold coin. Trying to find out any information on it. Is it a coin, commemorative, etc.. Several coin shops have said just melt it down for the gold value, but am wondering if it is an actual coin or something not of the official Iranian government at the time.

Thank you,

tmav

@tmav, first welcome to CCF. Second, showing us pics of the front and back of the coin would be a big help.

I think I know that kind of coin. But there is one issue...

The Shah, Mohamed Reza Pahlavi, issued a series of gold coins with Pahlavi as currency until the revolution in 1979. The smallest was 1/4 Pahlavi, then 1/2, 1, 2 1/2, 5 and 10. I got hold of the smallest two when I was in Iran, as I didn't have enough spare cash to buy anything bigger and no one accepts foreign plastic there due to the international sanctions. This is probably also why coin shops advise him to melt it down: it is not allowed by American law to say anything helpful about or to help Iran and its citizens. Within my company, to avoid any issues, we have strict guidelines about how to deal with Iranian customers and American employees to avoid issues.

The bad news is, none of the coins actually have a weight of 5 ounce (155 gram), assuming that you're talking troy ounce, that is, not American ounce. The biggest coin, the 10 Pahlavi, has a weight of just over 80 gram, or about 2,615 troy ounce. So I think we need to see some pictures here to see what we're dealing with.
