Hello folks.
I gave my coin collection to my son years ago, but I continue to enjoy adding coins to it. A friend of mine recently gave me the coin you see here. My friend is a professional archaeologist specializing in the middle East. While on a dig a few years ago in central Israel, a local farmer showed him a small juglet of coins he had plowed up in his nearby field. The farmer gave him ten of the coins, and this is one of those coins. While it is in very good condition, it was poorly struck. Most of the inscription is missing. I have spent hours looking through online reference collections and trying dozens of different ways to search for some identification of this coin. I'm planning on giving it to my son for his birthday, but would like to have a bit more info on if first. Any ideas? Any help is tremendously appreciated! 21mm, 9.0g.

Welcome!

It's a Roman coin from Alexandria. The denomination is a Tetradrachm but I can't work out who the ruler is. Super example though, a bit of searching about and you might be able to ID the emperor.

Kevin.

Outside my area of specialty, but I am pretty sure your coin is the emperor Aurelian.

I agree it is a Tetradrachm of the emperor Aurelian from the Alexandria mint dated year 4, 272-273 AD. Reference #"s Milne 4398, Emmett 3933-4.
