This is a type of Die Deterioration. I think its called die attrition.

First that I've seen with that.Interesting how the lettering crossed the crescent shaped cavity.

Here the reverse of the coin far from die attrition only the trace of clip is narrow.

Possibility this incomplete clip struck on blank planchet before striking.

I still see die attrition with a slight amount of finning on the reverse. Hope I'm wrong but that is what I see instead of an incomplete clip.

I agree that this is a die attrition error. The outer margin of the field portion of the die face was worn away from repeated collisions with the beveled entrance of the collar at a time when the hammer (obverse) die was misaligned.
Error coin writer and researcher.

I would certainly keep it for educational purposes. As far as value, I really don't know so I can't help you with that. It is a good piece. Thanks for posting it.

These are hard to find. So the value might surprise you in this one. Probably Mike can give us an idea of the value for this one. (I would just be guessing)
