Hi, here's another coin inherited from my father-in-law. Any information about it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. CPrince

Can you provide a size and weight? The mark on the edge which looks like a 1B or 13 concerns me though.

Sorry, I should have included that to begin with. It's 1.5 x 1.4cm and weighs 5g. It looks like the 1B or 13 is incised into the coin, not just written on it.
Thanks.

"IB" must be a collector´s mark... For us is unconceivable but collectors used to mark their coin with small punches whith letters, eagles, familiar arms etc...

A collectors mark would make sense. The weight under the Attic standard would make this coin a 1/2 Stater. I haven't found a match to it yet. If I do I'll let you know.

The fabric looks off, but I have been wrong with these archaic Greek coins before. I will defer my opinion to the experts here.

Excellent! Thanks.
There's wide variation in these pieces. Is that due to different makers, different dies....?
Thanks to all for the info.

I have a question for our experts on these coins. I notice that the reverse (with the portrait) was made using a non-square punch. I can tell this because from about one o'clock to three o'clock has a raised rim, but a curved edge. Is this common? The coins in the Bob's link all seem to have more squarish punches. Those that have a curved surface are without a raised rim indicating that the edge of the punch may have been located off of the flan.
I'm not suggesting that the OP coin is a fake, I'm just wondering about the likely method of manufacture.

Dave did you mean the link I posted? I'm no expert by any stretch of imagination, but I've seen then done as squared off and rounded. I don't think it had any meaning.

Quote: Bob's link yep oops--sorry about that. Ok, yes I'm sure that it is fine then. My image of those die punches was just that they were square-shaped. We see so many fakes posted in CCF that I'm trying to formulate rules of thumb in my brain for some of these.

Yes @bobisgr8--I had formulated something in my brain that wasn't correct. You have a way cool coin. I'm sorry for the circumstances that led to you getting it, but it is really nice!

Dave no worries My gut feeling is that this is a genuine coin. But I have been wrong more often than not.
