I think this is the first coin I ever bought on ebay. After I got it I realized it had been vigorously cleaned, giving it an unnatural glossy luster. I kept it anyway and with the increasing popularity of Russian coins that was probably a good decision. If you want to make any comments, feel free to be brutally honest!

I have nothing bad to say about that coin--I like it, it's actually one of my favorite designs.

To be brutally honest, I think you should carry in your pocket. That's where a polished coin belongs, and with time and wear the polish will gradually go away. I like the 1817 rouble on account of the deep strike of the eagle. I carry an 1831, but I like the 1817 better.

Unfortunately polishing coins used to be an accepted practice. Still it is a nice coin. I agree with thq, some time in your pocket will help to get rid of those fine hairlines and glossy look from the polish.

Is there some doubling/repunching on the "L" or is that pics?

JimR, here's a close-up of the obverse die crack: HABIB, here's a shot of the "L" (it's not an L of course, but I don't know the Cyrillic alphabet!). It's definitely re-punched, plus there are assorted die clashes or other odd features on the coin. Look by the right-side base of the "L": I'm taking Snowman and Thq's suggestion about carrying this coin in my pocket. Now if I can just remember not to add keys or spare change to the same pocket!

Jaobler---I see the one you are talking about, but I was talking about the 'L' on the eagle side, unless I'm mistaken about my Cyrillic alphabet, which is 100% possible--MONETA RUB-L-YA, we would probably call it an upside down 'V'.

Jaobler, I would do the opposite and recommend you NOT to wear that coin down to a F or worse. A coin in VF is worth around 50USD ish. Any lower well perhaps would be worth less but I wouldn't do it. You might lose details in the crack and doubling which is not what you want.
By the way, I would recommend you to post the coin in coinpeople in particular the Russian coin forum section as there are experts in Russian numismatics such as R.W. Julian and Steve Moulding - both of them are the editors of the Russian Numismatic Society and are highly respected.
