Its been months since I added anything significant to my collection. Some years back I became interested in the 1/12 ECU coins also known as 5 sols or Luigini ( singular Luigino). One rare example was struck in the Netherlands by the Zwolle mint. The main Dutch reference covering the striking ( Purma) states the coin was struck in 1662 and 1664. The 1662 strikes are rare and come up for sale about 2-3 times every three years. The 1664 is unheard of in the market. Communication with other collectors highlighted that there are strong suspicions the 1664 doesn't exist. I even wondered if the 1664 striking was just a re-striking of the 1662. I had done considerable research in Auction catalogs looking for proof the 1664 existed..... Having found nothing I gave up... until a Dutch Auction last week. The coin arrived today.

It's always so nice to find something you've sought for so long, doubly so when you thought it didn't even exist. Congrats!

It was a very pleasant surprise to see it listed, although it showed my search of Auction records was lacking. The coin was previously sold in an April 1975 Schulman( Netherlands) Auction. There is a reasonable chance this coin is one of a very few in existence. That is why I purchased it in such low grade. I aim to collect coins that other people don't have. I don't have the money that makes such a collecting approach easy so I have to look at more obscure series of coins. The downside is it can be months between finds!!

If this was a US coin, it would easily be worth six to seven figures. I think rarities such as these are quite undervalued.
Very nice and impressive pickup. You say it is in low grade, but I think it looks quite nice.

Nice one. I actually placed a bid on the 1662 one in the same auction (but didn't get it unfortunately). Amongst the Dutch provincial coins there are still quite a few of very rare coins to be found. That makes it every time interesting when those auction catalogues arrive, to see what they dig up this time. :)

I must have felt a milder version of something like this when I managed to get a pre-reform 7208 (1700) kopek this summer. I didn't think that particular date existed either. (Though they're an awful lot less rare than this coin is, obviously.)
