John77 and nickelsearcher have put up some fascinating posts with data about their searches (e.g., http://goccf.com/t/198187 ; http://goccf.com/t/274109 ). Here are my results for 98 boxes in 2016. Two V nickels (1883, 1907), 39 Buffaloes, 46 proofs, 108 silvers. I haven't found 1938-S or 1950-D. More than 30 of the proofs appeared in one box of machine-wrapped rolls, and a quarter of the silvers appeared in two customer-wrapped rolls. Wow ... very interesting that so many older dates are out there.
Thinking about searching nearly 100 boxes nickels makes my head hurt.
This is a game for those with good eyes.

Thanks for posting, aristarchus! It's a lot of fun to compare numbers... Looking at your numbers, the two things that surprise me the most are that you've somehow managed to find 6 1939-S coins, but only 1 1950 Philly... In comparison, to date I'm at 5 1939-S and 3 1950 Philly coins... statistical anomalies normally average out over time... for a very long while I was stuck at one 1 1945-P coin... now I'm up to 6. A similar thing happened to me Wheat cent hunting... the very common 1939 Philly coin had eluded me for 9 months until this past week. By chance, have you kept a tally of your 2009 nickels? I'm at 359 Ds to only 15 Ps. CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

yes your are lucky to find these, up here in Canada its getting harder and harder to find any other coins up here like nickels because of the gov't alloy recovering program that is pulling a lot of older coins out of circulation that is a bummer

Thanks, everyone. Ideally, I'd be able to finish the set this year, but now I'm pretty sure that will not happen, given my difficulty regarding the 38-S and 50-D. Quote:

I'm starting to think that maybe the banks back East just didn't order a lot of coins in 2009. 63 2009s total in 70 boxes is only .9 per box. I'm at about 3.3 total per box. I find a 2009-P every 15,176 coins, while you get one around every 5,185 coins... so they're 3x as easy to find for you as for me. But I find a 2009-D every 634 coins, while you find one around every 3,889 coins... so the 2009-D is about 6x as hard for you to find as for me... Wow! Awesome finds... Question: Do you get your boxes all from one bank/branch? Do they ever question why you want so many? Just curious.

My goal was to complete the set this year from circulation. Since I started in March, I'll now see if I can finish the set within a 12-month period. I would like to find the 38-S, another V-Nickel, and an older Canadian nickel in the remaining time. Right now the earliest Canadian I have found is only 1959. It seems easier to find older Canadian cents than nickels in US rolls. I'm not sure why this is, however. |

I should have mentioned also that I found 214 Canadian nickels.
1 Buffalo per 2.8 boxes
1 silver per 1.09 boxes
Not counting the outlier box of 35 proofs, the average was 1 proof per 8.2 boxes.
