How do you think this would grade? Does the crack running through the Queen appear to be a die error or damage? Any comments about this coin would be most welcome. I found it in my great-grandfather's coin collection.

The mark over the face looks like a scratch to me.

Definitely a scratch over the face! Coin looks VG details to my eyes.

Not a crack. If it was a crack, the line would start at the rim and be raised. I would grade it at F12 details

Much better than VG. On the obverse, the plait on the bun is clear, there's a vestige of the pattern on the dress, and quite a lot of the hairlines are visible. I think the obverse is slightly better than F.
On the reverse, the jewels in the crown band are sharp and most of the pearls visible. The wreath knot is well defined, as are most of the leaves and the flowers. I think the reverse is VF.
There seems to be a couple edge knocks on the reverse, too.

F15 w scratch
if not a sentimental coin it can be replaced pretty easily with a high grade example (xf+ in abundance).

Thanks again, those are all useful comments. This coin is part of a small, low-value, hodge-podge group of coins and paper currency I've had to assess and figure out what to do with because I have the unfortunate responsibility of disposing of my parents' estate It does have some sentimental value - I'm assuming the relative who collected it did so while working in Canada in the early 1900's (and serving with the Canadians during World War I), and it's not worth trying to sell - so I'll probably see if a sibling wants it.

Looked like someone drove a point of a knife into it and dragged it down over the Queens face. Fine details.

Ha ha, SHAFTA, it does look a bit like someone took a knife to it! If only coins could talk and explain their history...

Looks like two deliberate scratches to me. Was defacing the queen something people did on purpose back then? Was Victoria unpopular? Here's another recent example http://goccf.com/t/274157.

I see what you mean; it does look like someone carved an X right across her head.
