I'd appreciate your thoughts on the condition of this coin, including its grade. There is obvious wear on some of the sails, so it definitely was circulated. I don't believe it was ever cleaned.

Likely AU range .... appears to be an honest example of the initial USA commemorative type.

Looks like it wasn't carefully stored.
But the ropes across the mainsail are visible (they are VERY quick to disappear).

I'll go with the AU grade.

I am getting the feeling of a old cleaning, and see a couple very light scratches.

I would be at AU ... maybe AU details
Rest in Peace

I think it looks AU but I agree that it might have been cleaned, or more likely, wiped with a towel but not polished.

Still, a nice coin.

Thanks for your comments!
Kanga, you're right, it wasn't properly stored; it was just piled loose in a box with a bunch of other coins.

He is in pretty decent shape considering the neglect.

Nice coin and not bad for the storage that it went through.
Rest in Peace

AU-55. Neither the abrasions nor the possible light cleaning make much difference in value for this coin, as they are very common in circulated grades (and remain readily available up to MS-66).

It is a wonderful type that every U.S or ship collector should own.

These are remarkably inexpensive for what they are (and represent).
