Apparently some company is doing a painted style ASE that makes them look similar to RP's at a glance...

There's nothing to me about the coin in the article (from photos and description provided) that seems even remotely legit.

That said, I can absolutely see where someone not familiar with ASEs could be duped into paying more than what it is worth.

On the surface, ASEs are simple. They've only been around for 30 years (thank you, President Reagan) and the design has not changed in all 30. However if you've read any article on ASE's here on CCF there is always confusion on the various annual issues... bullion, burnished, proof, reverse proof, enhanced uncirculated, etc.

Very good article. It is always nice to know about what's
out there.

Every once in a while I run into a coin you know doesn't
exist and takes some time to figure it out. Just like in
this story.

Real looking Proofs and MS ASE's ( and MANY other coins) have been available for years on (Not Allowed)...two bucks for a nice proof and 46 cents for a decent MS version...

In quantity they will mint anything you want...

It is kinda dumb to create coins that never existed though (the RP mentioned)
Rest in Peace

If they got their overlay a little better positioned it would be harder to see the over spray.

These items are almost always made to fool the minimally interested persons who look and see there was never a 2004 listed and think they've hit the jackpot.

Someone asks about such fake items here nearly every day.
