Hi!

I'm new to this forum and new to coin collecting.

I went to a coin shop and saw some silver eagles that have black circular tone around the rim. Are black tone good or bad? One of it is a 2004 silver eagle and the seller is selling it for $3 above silver spot price.

Not all toning is bad. We might need to see some photos to make a better judgment.

If you are collecting, collect what appeals to you. If you are investing, buying at bullion prices, tone is irrelevant. If you are buying with an eye on selling individual coins as numismatic items, tone matters, so definitely feel free to post some photos and people here will be happy to assist you in your decision.

It's worth a chance at only $3 over spot. Then show us some photos.

On ASE's, black toning is generally due to improper handling. Real colorful, not artificial looking, toning is generally preferred and commands a premium. The black toning usually results in a discount. Of course it ultimately depends on the coin and the buyer.

I would expect a black-toned ASE to command less of a premium over spot than a shiny new example. Bbut the store still needs to make money so there will always be some markup.

If the toning is just along the outside of the coin rim it may have been stored in a coin album.

I have a couple of what I call "album toners" in my collection and some of them I think are attractive.
Depends on the severity I guess...... And some people hate it and only collect blast white coins.
