There are any number of triple punched 59's. The last digit 9 was handpunched into the working dies and it took 2-4 whacks with a hammer and punch to get it deep enough. After each whack, the punch was hardened and the die softened, so it was hours, days, weeks later that it was complete.
I have at least 4 different types of triple punched '59's, mostly showing at the knob. You can not go by the 2011 (65th edition) of Charlton as your only guide and I was heavily involved in writing it. We only put a few examples of what could be found for each date... it is NOT an exhaustive guide. It is/was BY FAR a very small portion of varieties that are out there.

Welcome to the forum! You can check on Dr. Haxby's catalog of 1859 Narrow 9 cents. The website is www.vickycents.comUnder the "ID my coin" tab, there is a section "ID by reverse markers". There you can click on the 9 to find photos of dates with repunched 9's. Or post your photos and someone on the forum will identify it for you.

We usually see coin photos as being much better than "scans".. Quote:

Devlec: As you know, I am a creature of habit and old school. I don't even know how to operate a cell phone, let alone ever own one. I haven't taken a photo in over 15 years, but sometime use my QX5 to store something for posterity. Most of my stored QX5 shots are over 10 years old. I bought a nice Nikon camera with great telephoto 3 years ago, but have yet to take it out of the box. You'll be looking at sod roots before I ever get around to posting photos.

There is repunching to the right of the main 9 and also repunching to the left at the top of the 9. I hadn't noticed that either until CV called it a triple. Very neat!

Here is a TP1. Now in a correctly attributed PCGS holder at AU-55. I also have a TP2 in an unattributed MS-63RB holder. Not sure if any have been graded higher, but I think they are still close to the highest graded.

Thanks bosox for showing the great ones again..Shouldn't that T2 in the above photo actually be your TP-1 in AU55..? Thanks for the added info Phil310 and CV.. I will have to go looking again...see if I can get a better pic of both sides of that 9..in the E 37 triple..or maybe CV can also post some of his great triples..maybe E 37 for starters.. .

I bought it about ten years ago in the DP T2 holder. It is now in a TP1 holder. My TP2 in 63 was the coin photographed for page 293 of the 2011 Charlton catalog.

E37 Triple 9 - here is a MS65 example. I've struggled with whether to call it a minor Triple 9, but I do believe it qualifies. It may in fact be a quad 9. The tripling is clear on the knob, the body of the 9 on the right, and for the loop it's clear that there is repunching to the left and a different repunching to the right....within the loop however there is some evidence of quadruple or quintuple punching.
